The Martyrology Museum in Słońsk is devoted to the history of the Sonnenburg prison and concentration camp. The object is made available to visitors after prior arrangement with the commune office or the curator.
The facility is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00-16:00.
Originally, the building was built as a defensive court of the knights of Henning and Arnold Uchtenhagen in the arms of the Łęcza river, it dates back to 1341. The castle came into the hands of the Hospitaller Knights in 1426 and was quickly adapted to the they needs. Currently, work is underway to secure the castle in the form of a permanent ruin, which will allow it to be used for tourist and cultural purposes.
“Ujście Warty” National Park was established on July 1, 2001. and is the youngest national park in Poland. However the year of the park’s establishment was not the beginning of the protection of this area. The first protective measures were taken for the area, which is now the southern part of the Park. There in 1965 was formed an open zoo that protected hunting resources. In 1977 r. the “Słońsk” nature reserve was established. It protected wetland birds. At that time, it was one of the largest ornithological reserves in Poland. This name is still often mentioned by the inhabitants of the region. The reserve itself ceased to exist with the creation of the National Park.
